Oh Say Can You See On This Memorial Day....

On This Memorial Day 2014, I'm thinking of a day way back in 1814 When a young man wrote our National Anthem. I'm sure you're probably thinking "Uh Karen, today is Memorial day, It's got nothing to do with the Star spangled Banner".

You would be partially right. The song was written during the Battle of Fort McHenry. That has nothing to do with Memorial Day, but what you may not know is something happened during that battle that would show the lengths to which our forefathers would go to fight for Freedom and birth a new Nation.

Prior to the Battle beginning that day the message had been sent to the Commander of the Fort that they need only lower the flag, and that would signal their total Surrender. That would end the war and the British would win. The men at the Fort knew what would happen if the flag fell. Their New Nation would fall. The soldiers made a commitment that day that our Military still makes today. The Flag would Not Fall.

The Flag and the flag pole were hit by the rockets that night. As some of those Soldiers close to the Flag were gravely injured they would use their body's to prop the flag pole up. In the morning their dead bodies were found lying atop each other making sure that Flag did not fall. That same Love of Freedom, Country, and our Flag motivate our young men and women to make that same kind of commitment today.

I hope as you head out to the beach today or BBQ with family and friends you will take a moment to reflect on the day. I hope you will take a moment to remember the sacrifice of family members, of those who have lived in your community, or those who've had books  about them written or movies made. Remember their sacrifice.

The story behind the star spangled Banner: http://www.historybuff.com/newsletter/july08.html

"Francis Scott Key, a Baltimore lawyer at the time, visited the enemy's fleet the day prior to the bombardment of Fort McHenry. He went aboard the ship to attempt to secure the release of a Maryland doctor, who had been abducted by the British after they left Washington. The lawyer was able to get the commander to agree to release the prisoner Dr. Beanes, but not until the next day and they both had to remain on board their ship until then. The commander also told them that they would be bombarding Fort McHenry that night. The fort commander was sent word to the Fort McHenry Commander, that whenever they wanted to surrender, all they had to do was lower the United States flag. As long as the flag was flying, the bombardment would continue. However, once they lowered the flag, it meant total surrender and the British would win the war.
An eerie silence fell across the early morning darkness and the young Baltimore attorney breathed a sigh of relief. It was after 1 A.M. on the morning of September 14, 1814 and it was the first time in more than 18 hours that things had been quiet. Since 7 A.M. of the previous day more than 1,800 bombs, cannonballs, and the new Congreve rockets had lit the sky and shattered the peaceful harbor. From the deck of his sloop behind the enemy fleet, the young Baltimore attorney breathed a sigh of relief. The flag was still there!

Upon discussing the previous night with survivors of the great battle, he learned just how much keeping the flag flying had meant to the soldiers. The flag itself was hit many times and had holes in it. In addition, several times through the night a cannon ball had hit the flag pole. It was hit enough times that the pole was actually leaning and in danger of toppling over. Brave men rushed to the pole to help prop it up with their bodies and arms. When one man holding the flagpole up was shot, another was ready to take his place. This is how they kept the flag flying all night!"

Memorial Day... Not just for Parades, Grilling, And Beach Parties....

Every year at this time I start to reflect. I think about the men and women who have given the last best gift to us as a Nation. Their gift is one of Sacrifice and True Patriotism. One of blood and their last breath.

I am fortunate to be able to support our Troops through a wonderful Troop Support group.  Over the past 10 years I have had an opportunity to adopt 62 + Service members off our group list. I've packed their boxes and written letters to Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors. What a wonderful Blessing.

One of the boxes I packed for one of my "Special" Soldiers...

I have also attended the heartwarming Homecomings for several of our Troops.

A big escort and welcome home for Nathan from the Patriot Guard Riders of Michigan

Homecoming for Cpl. Andrew. Andrew was injured.
He returned and walked off the plane.
The greatest most wonderful Homecoming I've had the honor of attending..

I've also attended  the funerals for a few of our Troops who made that last and greatest Sacrifice.
Over 100 flags lined the street and the entrance to the Funeral of

I, like many, look forward to Memorial Day.. The official beginning of summer, family vacations, boating, fishing, beach parties, warm weather, Sun, and a myriad of things we all love about those few precious months of summer.

I made a promise to myself when my cousin Tommy, Lance Cpl. Thomas Robert Tormanen, died during Operation Dessert Storm in Kuwait in March of 1991. That Promise was to never forget. To say his name and remember the Sacrifice he made not only for me, but for millions of Americans. I will continue to keep that promise to speak their names.. To remember those whose names I know and those I never knew. The sacrifice was the same.

I choose on this Memorial Day weekend..
to do what this holiday was intended for.
To pause, to remember, to honor.
Please take a moment and honor some Heroes
that have given all for Freedom...
Say their names and remember....

Forever in our Hearts. Never to be Forgotten

Freedom Isn't Free...

I often wish that there was some way I could speak to all our Military personnel. I'd love to talk to all our Veterans. I would tell them a few things..
First I'd tell them how much their Willingness to serve our Country means to me. It's a Sacrifice those of us who have never been in the Military don't fully understand. I'd thank their families for the hours and days that they "go on" without their children, husbands, wives, Daddy's, and Mom's. They make a sacrifice too. I fear that there are far to many of us, who forget what living in a Free Country entails. Without the Sacrifice of Many our lives would be nothing like they are..

If I could meet each one of these heroes I would hug their necks and and tell them that they are not forgotten. So I guess My blog today is to those Who Serve our Country. Those "Watchmen on the Wall" who give their all. Who are willing to give even their lives so that you and I can sleep peacefully in our beds tonight.. Our children can play without fear of IED's or suicide bombers. We are free to protest the government, the war, our taxes etc. because many died for that right..

Dear Veteran/Soldier/Marine/Seaman/Airman/Guard,
I just wanted to let you Know that I am thinking of you today.
I think sometimes we forget that Memorial Day is NOT about cookouts, or picnics, parades, or fireworks. Memorial Day is about remembering those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their Country and our way of life.
Today I am remembering those I love who have made that sacrifice. Today I Say Their Names.. As long as there is Someone who will Say their Names, They are never truly gone.
They live forever in our Hearts.

Today I Say their Names: My Cousin, Marine Lncpl. Thomas “Tommy” Robert Tormanen Gulf War, Love you Tommy, miss you...

Today I am remembering those whose names are etched on monuments in great halls, on walls of stone and granite, on white markers in great and small places all over the world, and on the hearts of all who loved them. Today I am thankful for the sacrifice that was made so I can enjoy Memorial Day with my family at our bbq's and picnics, at the parades and the fireworks. Today I also want to remember and thank all our Military Men and women for being a "watchman on the wall" thank you for your service to our Country and your sacrifice. You are always my Hero. God Bless you in a very special way.
